PLANNING DIRECTOR
The Planning Director is an executive leadership, non-union position under the direction of the Mayor and is responsible for leading the development of Woonsocket’s vision for the future, along with its ultimate implementation. The Planning Director is also responsible for the oversight and leadership of the City’s Planning Department and related staff which includes the Zoning and Building Inspection Departments. The Planning Director will play a key role in guiding the City’s economic, social and spatial development initiatives and activities. This position will work in collaboration with, and provide technical assistance to, other City departments, City boards and agencies, federal and state agencies, local businesses as well as Woonsocket residents. Excellent administration, communication and process management skills are necessary for the Planning Director to become successful. The Planning Director duties include working to develop Woonsocket’s social, economic, spatial and structural short and long-term initiatives; assisting in long range planning which includes developing, and then organizing, the implementation of a comprehensive Master Plan; and advising developers, businesses and taxpayers on procedural requirements in advancing their proposals and projects. Applicants must have at least four (4) years of progressive, responsible planning experience in Rhode Island. Municipal planning experience is preferred; however, candidates with a proven track record of planning and/or development success will receive consideration. Applicants should have a strong work ethic, excellent communication and presentation skills and the ability to work with diverse individuals and groups. It is important that applicants have a working knowledge of computer applications including Microsoft Office and GIS.
