WATER UTILITY PERSON


The City of Woonsocket, Rhode Island is conducting a search for a Water Utility Person for the Public Works Department, Water Division.  Under general supervision of the Water Division Superintendent, the person in this position will be responsible for operating and preparing water gate valves and boxes, water mains, hydrants and service lines and boxes.  Required to do cement and masonry work as it pertains to water projects, as well as laying and repairing water pipes and service lines as needed.  Must be able to operate power tools for projects, as well as operate light trucks less than 3.5 tons.  A high school diploma, or a GED equivalent, is required.  Must have four (4) years of experience in either skilled or semi-skilled construction, with two (2) of those years in the operation and maintenance practices of a municipal water system.  Must possess a Class 1 Distribution Operator License within one (1) year of employment, and possess a Class B CDL within six (6) months.  City employees who are currently Laborers, Light Equipment Operators or Medium Equipment Operators in the Water Division are considered to possess the appropriate training and experience.

JOB TITLE:                           Water Utility Person


DEPARTMENT/DIVISION:  Public Works Department/Water Division


PAY GRADE/HOURS:          Grade M72 / 40-hour work week

POSITION SUMMARY:  Under general supervision of the Water Division Superintendent or Supervisor, the Water Utility Person performs a wide variety of skilled and semi-skilled maintenance work on the water system, attends training seminars, and does related work as required.


JOB DUTIES:

  • Operates and prepares water gate valves and boxes, water mains, hydrants and service lines and boxes.
  • Does variety of cement and masonry work.
  • Fits, lays, caulks, and repairs water pipes and service lines.
  • Works independently or as a member of a maintenance or construction crew.
  • Supervises helpers or other workers in the performance of related work.
  • Operates power tools, such as, power saws, tampers, and road saws.
  • Operates light trucks of various sizes and under three and one-half tons.
  • Performs other duties as required.


QUALIFICATIONS:  A high school diploma, or a GED equivalent, is required.  Must have four (4) years of experience in skilled and semi-skilled construction is required; two (2) of those years must be related to the operation and maintenance practices of a public water system.  Must possess or obtain a Class B CDL License within six (6) months of employment.  Must possess a Class 1 Distribution Operator License within one (1) year of employment.  City employees, who are currently Laborers, Light Equipment Operators, or Medium Equipment Operators in the Water Division are considered to possess the appropriate training and experience.


KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND PERSONAL QUALITIES:  Thorough knowledge in the use and maintenance of common hand tools in the construction and maintenance of water systems.  Good knowledge of practices in the construction and maintenance of public water systems and the geography of the City.  Skilled in the operation of light motor and pneumatic equipment; mechanical ability, physical strength, carefulness, resourcefulness, integrity and self-motivation.
